1883 Dec 5 - New Vienna Fine Stock Breeders' Association.  The Association met Saturday, December 1, at New Vienna with the following breeders present: James H. Terrell, Jonathan Leeka, James M. Cline, Jeff D. Spear, Eli Powell, James A. Spear, Wm. Moon, of New Vienna; J. M. Rulon, C.D. McKenzie, T.J. Porter, Wm. W. H. Huff, J. W. Bashore, or New Antioch; and I.T. 1883 Dec 19 - UPDATE on Railroad News [as last reported in the July "3" News in which it was announced the Columbus & Midland Railroad would not pass through New Vienna].  The [rail]road from Columbus to Washington C.H. will soon be completed passing over almost the same route as originally surveyed for the Columbus & Maysville railroad.  "It seems that Washington C.H. is greatly dissatisfied with the change [from New Vienna], and this again turned the attention of her citizens to the importance of completing a railroad from Columbus to Maysville KY.  "Many people here are a little sore upon the subject of railroads ... and there is general dissatisfaction at the outcome ... for the action in making Clinton Valley the terminus instead of New Vienna." --Highland Weekly News, 19Dec1883p5

1893 Dec 2 - Pensions [military] were granted to Ohio applicants today as follows:  Samuel H Cline, New Vienna.  [Civil War veteran, Cline, 1842-1900, had been declared an invalid on July 2, 1892.  He is buried in New Vienna IOOF Cemetery.] --Cincinnati Enquirer 2Dec1893 p6

1893 Dec 28 - MARRIED at the bride's home, Highland Ave., New Vienna, Tuesday evening, December 19, 1893, Mr. Charles E. Kratzer of Hillsboro, and Miss Jessie M. Gordon.  [Jessie 1866-c1918 was the aunt of Virginia Gordon Walker.  Kratzer, 1865-1928, operated a photography gallery in New Vienna according to the 1920 census.]  --Hillsboro News-Herald 28Dec1893p1

1943 Dec 24 - WELL IS WEAK: Mayor of New Vienna, H.L. Carey, announced new well drilled at the edge of New Vienna, in an effort to increase the water supply, is not very strong. It is not known whether the New Vienna Board of Public Affairs will connect this well with the village water system.  [Harry Lee Carey, 1888-1955, grandfather of Shirley Carey McKamey, served as Mayor 1943-45 and 1947-48]   --(Hillsboro) Press Gazette 24Dec1943p5

1963 Dec 3 - DEATH of Mrs. Rose Rollins, 97, of Gist Settlement, daughter of Thomas and Senia Lawson, she was born in Highland County in 1866. She was survived by five sons and three daughters, 48 grand-children and great and great-great grandchildren.

1963 Dec 13 - New Vienna Christmas Events: Santa Claus will appear at the New Vienna firehouse on Monday, Dec. 23 where Lions Club members will assist in handing out treats.  The following committees were appointed: Soliciting Funds: Julian McKenize and Ed Duncan; buying treats, Hamer Rife [Rice?], Mrs. Gerald Bernard [Helen Engle Bernard 1930-2011] and Mrs. Linley Moore [Florence]; Music will be arranged by Robert Sonners, Robert Seaman and Junior Daye.  Gary Tolle will choose secret judges to choose the three best decorated houses with prizes of $15, $10 and $5. --Hillsboro Press Gazette 13Dec1963p24

1873 July 31 - Granges organized at New Vienna and Pricetown [Highland County].  Names of the officers of the New Vienna Grange were unavailable but are "men of great energy."

1873 July 31 - Rev. William D. MOORE [1824-1917], of New Vienna, commenced a series of discourses in the [Highland County] Court House, to large and attentive audiences.  He is a follower of Alexander Campbell and the Restoration Movement which was the beginnings of the Church of Christ.

1883 July 4 - IMPORTANT RAILROAD NEWS: Wilmington Jubilant – New Vienna Disappointed.  The Columbus Syndicate and directors of the Columbus & Midland Railroad voted for the location of the road to run from Washington C.H. through Sabina, Wilmington, Cuba and Clinton Valley.  This will put Sabina on the the line of two of the richest railroad corporations in the US, viz: the Pennsylvania Central and Baltimore & Ohio.  The New Vienna Record reported on the sad disappointment of losing the line and blaming the money available in the county seat which "our little village" could not match.

1893 July 20 - Ad – RACES! at New Vienna August 3, 4, & 5. The Board of Directors of the New Vienna Racing Association has prepared at attractive program for their next meeting. There will be three days of good racing.  Send for programs.  R.M. WILLIAMS, Sec'y, New Vienna.

1903 July 1 - Death of James H. West, born 1821 in Martinsville.  His son, Edwin P."Professor" West, was Supt. of New Vienna Schools from 1887-1901.  --Wilmington Journal July 1, 1903 as abstracted by Joyce Pinkerton.

1913 July 10 - Henry Brown, M.D., son of Dr. and Mrs. E.W. Brown of New Vienna, promoted from private to sergeant in the First Field Hospital Corps., O.N.G. [Ohio National Guard?].  He is an intern in the Jewish Hospital, Cincinnati.

1913 July 10 - The New Vienna Baptist Church is to receive $5000 from the estate of Penn  Township farmer, William H. Burnett [1839-1911, Burnett never married but was an uncle to William "Bill" VanWinkle 1866-1959.]  James Greathouse, a cousin, is administrator of the estate.  

1943 July 6 - Highland County Sheriff Cleo Shaffer, Deputy Wesley Kelly, New Vienna Police Chief Grover Dennis and Clinton County Deputy Floyd Foote arrested one army and one marine corps straggler near New Vienna Thursday evening.  The two "stragglers" were taken to Patterson Field by military police.

1953 July 18 - Clayton Terrell of New Vienna, will speak at the sixth annual Sheep Day on July 17 on his philosophy of sheep farming.  --Sandusky Register July 18, 1953 p.6.

1953 July 23 - New Vienna mentioned in an ad for Ohio Consolidated Telephone Company, known as Clinton Telephone Company until 1944, now serving over 49,000 customers in 40 cities including New Vienna.  --Times Recorder (Zanesville) July 23, 1953 p.19.

1963 July 1 - Marriage Announcement of Jane McKibben [NVHS'59], daughter of Mr. & Mrs. John McKibben, to David Puderbaugh on June 23. --Sandusky Register July 1, 1963 p.22.

1963 July 2 - Mrs. Richard (Elizabeth) Nixon offered contract to teach vocal music in the Greenfield McClain Junior/Senior High School.  [Elizabeth Ann Sayre Nixon 1926-2000]

1963 July 5 - Mr. and Mrs. Lee Carey announce the birth of a son.

1963 July 12 - Don Bernard, New Vienna, was appointed as delegate to the Ohio Farm Bureau and will serve as part of the Policy Development Committee.
