1967 Anna Louise Harner Favorite Recipe

Anna Louise Harner's favorite recipe was featured in the "Her Favorite Recipe" feature of the Wilmington News-Journal, possibly in spring 1967.  Other favorite recipes previously posted in the NV Memories Blog include:  Ralph Cornelius (1962), Donna Cornelius (1961), Dorothy Daye (1963), Betty Gano (1961) and Melba Fawley (1970).  Transcription of clipping follows.

Captioned: PACKING THE CARAMELS – Mrs. Harner has the excellent idea of packing the caramel's she makes for gifts in reusable containers.  Of course they're ideal Christmas giving and the boxes, as she says, "add to the giving."

Now is the time – for strawberry shortcake.  We are proud to give you a recipe for old fashioned shortcake and that's the best kind.  Mrs. Orville Harner of SR 729, New Vienna area, is the kind donor of this plus a recipe for caramel candy.

Mrs. Harner is a teacher and a 4-H leader.  Teaching is both her hobby and her  job.  She teaches fourth grade and she teaches the adult class in the Fairview Friends Church.  She enjoys this, devotes a good deal of study to it and enjoys the different type of teaching it requires.

She has taught other than fourth but fourth grade is her favorite and besides, 4-H starts there for children.  New Vienna Tasty Club is her club and she is faithful to the members.  Nothing deters her meeting with the club.  It's been that way for the 19 years she has been a leader.

In the family are a daughter, Mrs. Richard Donahey Jr. [Isabelle, NVHS'60], Columbus, John, a junior in Wilmington College [NVHS'64, deceased 2012], Elaine, 17, in junior high [sic –Brenda "Elaine" Harner Fife, would have been (a junior?) in high school, sadly she is also deceased, 2005] and Mrs. Harner's mother, Mrs. Minnie Mathews, who incidentally is also an excellent cook.

Mrs. Harner is a 1963 graduate in social studies of Wilmington College.  She is an avid reader of novels and biographies, averages two books a week and often at night reads straight through a book.  If it's fairly light reading she'll read from 8 to midnight and that'll complete a book.

She used to sew a lot, made her clothing herself.  She doesn't do that much now but she still likes to crochet.

The Harners have a dairy herd.  It's electric milking and Mrs. Harner has never helped with it.  They like to travel and during the years have been all over the United States.  They do not take extensive trips now because they can't leave the dairy farm but they hope to make it to Expo 67 this summer.  They want to stop en route in Pennsylvania to visit relatives.  The children travel a good bit since they are older.  They have friends in the east whom they go to see in the summers.

ONE-EGG CAKE
2-3 c sugar [not sure if this is ⅔ cup sugar or two-three cups of sugar!  The latter would be much sweeter.]
¼ c shortening
¼ t salt
1 t vanilla flavoring
1 egg
1½ c flour
½ c milk
2 t baking-powder
Cream shortening and sugar.  Add unbeaten egg.  Add flavoring.  Beat thoroughly.  Sift flour, measure, and sift with salt and baking powder.  Add alternately with milk to creamed shortening and sugar.  Pour into well-oiled loaf pan.  Bake in moderate oven (375º F.) 35 minutes.

This is the recipe Mrs. Harner uses for her family short cakes during the strawberry season.  She sometimes adds a different flavor for the shortcake by substituting lemon flavoring in place of the vanilla

CARAMELS 
FIRM BALL
2 c sugar
2 c cream
1¾ c corn sirup [sic]
1 c butter or butter substitute
1 c chopped nuts
Few grains salt
Boil all together except the nuts and 1 cup cream.  boil 30 minutes.  Add the second cup of cream and boil to a firm ball stage.  (248 degrees F.).  Add nuts and pour without stirring into well-buttered pan.  When cold cut in squares.

Mrs. Harner has found that in the first 30 minutes, if boiled to 244 degrees F., it works out very well.

Anna Louise Mathews Harner, born 1920, passed away in June 1978.  She was much loved, not only by her family but by those she taught and her 4-H family.

Local Scouts Visit Air Force Academy

While returning from an expedition from the National Scout Ranch at Philmont, New Mexico,  Tecumseh Council Scouts traveled north to Colorado Springs, Col., for an overnight stop at Fort Carson.  Monday afternoon the eight Scouts and two advisors visited the United State Air Force Academy.

The tour covered major points of interest such as the Fieldhouse Chapel, and Visitor Information Center.  Cadets were observed in drill as well as off duty.

The crew continued home Tuesday, spending the night in eastern Missouri.  Wednesday the two-car caravan stopped at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati to visit John Uible, one of our number unable to attend the trek since he was stricken with typhoid fever.

The expedition returned to New Vienna Wednesday afternoon, Aug. 2, at 4:30.

Wayne Ames To Play In All Ohio Band

Wayne Ames, son of Mrs. Jean Ames, New Vienna, has been chosen to play in All-Ohio Boys' Band at the Ohio State Fair Aug. 24 to Sept. 3.  He will play the sousaphone (tuba).

Ames attended AOB band camp in June at Rhodes Center at the state fairground.  Director is Omar Blackman of Cleveland.

Ames will be a junior this fall at East Clinton High School.

In the eighth grade he received a superior rating playing tuba solo in the district contest.  He has been a member of the E-C marching, concert, and stage band for two years and four years grade school band.

Other activities by Wayne include State FFA band two years, 4-H five years, FFA two years.  He won second place in Junior division "Enquirer Boy of the Year" in 1970.  Member of New Vienna United Methodist Church and Union Grange No. 77.

1963 8th Grade Party - May 29

The NV eighth grade class of 62-63 finished their last year at New Vienna School and celebrated with a party, which was written up in the Wilmington News-Journal.  Transcription follows.

Eighth Graders Have Gala Party

When games, a barn dance, lots of good food and a hayride are combined into one evening it's bound to be quite a party.

That's what happened to the New Vienna eighth graders Wednesday night. It was also their farewell to the New Vienna school as they consolidate with Simon Kenton in the fall.

Mr. and Mrs. Paul Eltzroth had the party for the class at their place with room sponsors Mr. and Mrs. Paul Eltzroth and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Fisher.  Other chaperones were Mr. and Mrs. Harold Uible, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Linkhart, Mr. and Mrs. George Gano and Mrs. Mary Nischwitz.

The evening started with a softball game and then a barbecue.  The barn had been cleaned and the class had decorated it in blue and white.  They sat on bales of straw, a long table held assorted food and an amazing scarecrow made the teen table setting.

After the barbecue everyone danced to the records.  The first dance was started by the king and queen, Greg Linkhart and Shirley Bernard and attendants, Linda Eltzroth and Larry Pope, Weegie Hughes and Walter McVey.

The hayride wound up the evening with Thomas Swingley the driver.

Additional guests at the party were Mr. and Mrs. William Cochran and Neil, Chrystal and Brian Linkhart, Lee and Larry Eltzroth, John Uible and Jennifer Gano.

NEW VIENNA TASTY CLUB

The Tasty Club met Tuesday in the school cafeteria at 3:30.

Sybil Gano led us in the 4-H pledge.

Everyone must have their membership cars in by May 31.

We elected the officers for 1963.  They are president, Ann Harper; vice president, Carolyn Collier; secretary, Catherine Uible; treasurer, Debra Brumley; reporter Alice Fisher; recreation leaders, Patti Baker and Valerie Allen; health and safety leader, Dianne Burton.

The officers training meetings is tonight at Denver Place School.

A few details on cast members:

Aleda Purtee, 1925-1996, daughter of Wibur and Edith Cline Purtee, became a second grade teacher at New Vienna School.

Helen Crone Murphy, 1925-1985, daughter of Harry and Elva Alice Parr Crone, was a sister to Hayward Crone and three other siblings.  She married Kenneth Murphy but divorced in 1983.

Virginia Wayland Rulon, 1925-, married Paul E. Rulon of New Vienna.

Barbara Penn Nash, 1925-2007, daughter of Howard and Hazel Penn.

Virginia Hedrick Ludwick, 1925-1991, daughter of Fred Elmer and Verda Viola Stanforth Hedrick, married Harry Wilford Ludwick in 1950.

Glenn Pierson, Jr., 1923-1959, son of Glenn McPhail and Vesta Hendee Pierson, he married Josephine Harris (now Drake), and was killed in a mill accident in 1959 at the age of 36.

Darold Whitmer, 1925-2001, son of Perry and Bertha Ann Crabtree Whitmer.

Lawrence Newbrey, Jr., 1925-2006, son of Lawrence and Evelyn West Newbrey.

Dorsey Greene, 1925-2000, son of Thomas Grover and Anna Lea Murphy Greene.

There were 17 in the Class of 1943, ten of them pictured above who participated in the class play.    Other members of the class included Bruce Kinzer, Willis Davis, Melvin Long, Duane Long, Dale Everhart, Delbert Floyd, Earl Roush and Grace Backus. New Vienna in the Roarin’ Twenties by Robert E. Wright - Part 1

This article, written by Robert E. Wright NVHS Class of 1921 first appeared in the Wilmington News-Journal on Monday May 22, 1972.

(Editor’s Note: Robert E. Wright Sr. of Cincinnati, a 1921 graduate of New Vienna High School, recalls New Vienna in the Roarin’ Twenties. He has written the following story in hopes of preserving some facts about its history... On May 27 [1972] the New Vienna Alumni Banquet is scheduled again at the school. Last year [1971] Wright’s Class celebrated its 50th anniversary. Three other men of that class, Clay Richard Clark, Walter Matson and George M. Neffner Jr., were present.)

The town of New Vienna is situated on the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad halfway between Cincinnati and Chillicothe. It is at the junction of State Route 28 and 73 – Martinsville and Farmers Station to the west on 28 and Highland and Leesburg in Highland County to the northeast of [on] 28. It is about halfway from Wilmington and Hillsboro on 73. Both of these cities are county seats.


In 1920 it had a population of around 900 people. A number of businesses places could be found on both sides of Main St. that extended from the B&O Station north to a cluster of houses call Huff Town toward the Bernard and Terrell neighborhood. This Main St. met State Route 28 in the center of the town to form a Y. In the center of the Y was a town pump, where man and beast could refresh themselves at the well. Later the pump was moved to the edge of the sidewalk on the east side of the Dr. George R. Conard [b. 1/5/1842, Acting Asst. Surgeon of the US Army at the end of the Civil War, read more about him here.] residence, where a new well was drilled. The Conard residence had several tall cedar trees, where the purple grackles, called blackbirds, were wont to assemble in the evening and cause a great racket.

In building a new roadway down Main St. they dug up parts of an old corduroy road composed of split logs of locust and black walnut. It was surprising that they had been preserved from those earlier days. Iron posts and chains for hitching horses were to be found in front of most places of business. New Vienna was no one horse town and there were many hitching racks. It was a typical Saturday night town, like many small Ohio towns in the Twenties.
