1942 - April news from Hillsboro newspaper

The Press-Gazette (Hillsboro, Ohio) was published on Tuesdays and Fridays in 1942.  Most issues were 6 pages, though some were 12.  News of the War and farm, dairy and poultry news comprised the top stories and two pages were usually devoted to social and personal news.  A subscription was $2/year or three months for 50¢.

April 3, 1942: Lucy Wood (1870-1952, mother of Grace Long) entertained to dinner Sunday Homer Bohl (1897-1971), wife (Bessie 1897-1986) and daughter, Caryl Lou of New Vienna, Glenn Wood (1902-?) and son, Jimmy of Cincinnati, and Gleason Long (1911-1993) and wife.  Glenn was Grace's older brother.  Gleason and Grace Wood Long are the parents of Sue and Beth.  Caryl Lou later married Harry G. Allen (1929-2008).

April 10, 1942: Obituary of Allen A. Curtis (1855-1942), father of Carrie Curtis Eaton (1892-1971), grandfather of Virginia Eaton Hildebrant (1917-2007) and Joe Eaton (1918-1968), great-grandfather of Janie Hildebrant Pidgeon among others.  He was "survived by his widow, 11 children, 19 grandchildren and 14 great-children".

April 17, 1942: Military News - Corp. Elroid (sic) Collier (1915-2000), of Indiantown Gap, Pa., arrived Wednesday evening for a few days leave of absence, which he will spend with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Collier, near Sinking Spring.  Elroyd married Mabel Shoemaker (1916-2004) in 1945.  They were the parents of Charlie and Carolyn.  See Shoemaker/Collier Family: NV Mill (related) stories #1 for more information about the Shoemaker/Collier family.

April 21, 1942:  Obituary of Linda L. Burton, 10-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Burton, who died at her home near Careytown.  Besides her parents she was survived by three brothers and one sister, David Allen (1932-2001), Robert Mitchell (1938-1990), Donald Lee (1940-2009) and Barbara Alice (1935-1984).  She was pre-deceased by a brother Ronald (1934-1934).  Hugh (1905-1967) and Sarah Shinkle Burton (1914-1984) were also the parents of Elaine, Hugh Jr., Dianne, Cynthia, Lydia, Aaron [and others between Linda and Elaine??]

Mrs. Wolfe's 4th-5th Grade Class 1962

The previous year Mrs. Wolfe had a combo 4th-6th grade class, when she was still Miss Smart. She must have married Bill Wolfe in the summer of 1961.

NVHS Class of 1931 A Memorial

In Memory of my aunt, Mary Uible Horton, last known surviving member of the Class of 1931, who passed away March 2, 2012.

Mary was born August 8, 1913, the daughter of Cecil and Gladys Hiestand Uible. The family moved to New Vienna in 1927. Prior to New Vienna, Mary attended school in Westboro and Hillsboro. She married William A. Horton from Jefferson County, Ohio.  They had four children: Joseph, Marianne, Cris and Robert.  Though they moved to Florida in 1951, the family often visited New Vienna.  For more on Mary see this post.

Trivial Tidbits about the Class of 1931

• 19 Class Members graduated – 9 boys and 10 girls.  When they were in first grade in 1918-1919, Mary Hoskins was the teacher and there were 31 enrolled.
• They were born in 1911(3), 1912(3), 1913(9) and 1914(4).   
• They died in the 1970s(1), 1990s(10), and six of them after the year 2000, when most of them still alive turned 87; and two in unknown years.  [Anyone have additional information about Alberta Gilbert or Olivia Michael?]
• Only one marriage occurred between classmates of this class: Velma Bernard and Willard McKenzie; though Eleanor Haynie Bentley's husband, Virgil graduated in 1930. 
• Two of them never married: Wilbur Cochran and Eloise Simkins.  The same two that have unknown death dates also have unknown marital status.
• Eleven of them lived most of their lives in Clinton County.
• At least six of them were related to the Bernard family by birth or marriage.
• Forrest Martin (1885-1940) was the School Supt. when the Class of 1931 graduated.  He was the father of David Martin (NVHS '34) and the grandfather of Larry Martin.  Forrest and Principal, Homer Caskey, are pictured further below with the graduating class outside the school.
  
• Pictured immediately below is the class in First Grade 1918-1919 with teacher Mary Hoskins.  At least 14 of these first graders did not graduate with the class – don't know about the five who are unidentified.  Those who did not graduate with the class include Ralph Sanders, Carl Hodson, Lora Runk, Wahneta Hodson, Julia Jones, Lena Gregory, Margaret Pinkerton, Pauline Brown, Eileen Brown, Nelson Powell, Donald Powell, Paul Miller, Stanley Sanders and Grant Fenner.  

The Class of 1931

• Carlos Achor (1913-1997) was the son of Edward S. and Charlotta Pratt Achor.  He married Dorothy Summers (1915-1989) in 1938, they had three children, Roger (Janet Terrell), Jeanette, and Wayne.  He was a farmer on Rapid Forge Rd, Clark Township. 
• Eleanor Haynie Bentley (1913-2004) married Virgil Bentley (1911-1993), who graduated from NVHS in 1930.   She died in Sabina (or WCH) in 2004.  They had a farm in Wayne Township on Terrell Road.
• Arthur Woodmansee Bernard (1913-2006) was the son of James K. and Erma Woodmansee Bernard.  His mother died the year he was born; he and his sister, Berneta Bernard Hackney were raised by his father.  He married Virginia Carey (1918-2011) in 1940.  He and his father farmed together – the Bernard and Tilton homesteads on Tilton Road.  He and Virginia had five children: Roger "Dean", John, Marilyn, Charles, and Paul.
• Wilbur Cochran (1912-1994) was the son of Edward R (1888-?) and Sarah J Fender (1890-1970) Cochran of Highland County.  He was one of seven siblings, including his older brother Ernie (1911-1992) who married Vivian Bernard (1910-2006).  Wilbur never married and died in Wilmington in 1994.  He had a farm on Anderson Road in Union Township.
• Virginia  Elizabeth McVey Fox (1913-2001) was the daughter of Frank McVey (1872-1947) and Bertha Driscoll McVey (1873-1957).  She  married Guy Fox (1909-1987) in Barbourville KY in 1937 and they had three children.  Her paternal grandparents, Edmund (1845-1923) and Martha Jane Bernard (1850-1896) McVey were born in Wayne Township.  She died in North Carolina in 2001.
• Alberta Gilbert (1914-?) was the daughter of Charles Gilbert.  They lived in Penn Township.  Her mother probably died when Alberta was young.  In the first grade picture she is identified as Albert.
• George William Johnson (1913-1994) was the son of William and Sarah "Sally" Elliott Johnson.  He married and was a machinist.  His cousin, George Washington Johnson (1902-1977) was a 1921 NVHS graduate and a life-long resident of New Vienna.  Both of these Georges would be a cousin to John and Linda Levo as the two Georges' great-grandfather, Michael Mount Johnson, was also the grandfather of Annie Johnson Levo.  Therefore Michael Mount Johnson would be the Levo's 2nd great-grandfather.
• Velma Bernard McKenzie (1913-1991) and Willard McKenzie (see below) - High School sweethearts, these two were married Feb. 22, 1934.  Velma was the daughter of James and Charlotte Staubus Bernard.  In addition to raising the couple's four children: Dwight, William, Patricia and Karen; she was active in local organizations and was a 4-H leader. 
• Willard McKenzie (1912-2009, see above) Willard was the oldest of two children born to Julian S. and Jessie Record McKenzie.  His mother died when he was quite young and he grew up on a farm near New Vienna.  He had a dairy farm on Clelland road near Martinsville and worked for Randall Co. until his retirement in 1980.   After retiring he and Velma moved to West St. in New Vienna.  
• John D. McKibben (1913-1998) was the son of Lakin and Kate Smithson McKibben.  He married Eleanor Dunlap (1917-2011), daughter of Isaac and Bernice Carey Dunlap.  They had two sons and a daughter, and lived on West Street in New Vienna.  John was a mason (bricklayer) and worked on many New Vienna homes and at Wells Mfg.  
• Olivia Michael born in 1914, was the daughter of  Wilbert K. and Carrie Michael who lived in Chester Township.  Her grandparents may have lived in New Vienna.
• Margaret Henderson Rea (1914-1978) was the daughter of Ernest Douglas and Grace Henderson. She was the sister of George Henderson, father of David (Ruby) and Nancy Henderson Hamilton.  She married William Rea of Washington County, Ohio, and they had four children.  She was a music teacher. 
• Wilber Howard Reveal (1913-1996 or 1995?) was the son of Howard and Vesta Florence Chancy Reveal.  He married Louise Tedrick in 1936.  They lived on S Beechgrove Road in Wilmington where he was a dairy farmer and drove a school bus for Clinton Massie Schools.
• Charles Edwin Rulon (1914-1998) was the son of Charles and Martha Ann Curtis Rulon.  He died in South Carolina where his daughter was living.  He married Joan Moore in 1940 and they later divorced.  She was the mother of their two children, Robert Edwin and Kathryn.  He later married Dorothy West and they also divorced.  He was a coach at New Vienna High School from 1940 until he joined the military in 1942.  He was a nephew of R.J. and Fred Rulon and thus his cousins included Alberta Harubin, Janet Cluxton, and Joellen Streber, Betty Thompson, and Joan Hughes. 
• Eloise Simkins (1912-1998) - was the daughter of Fred and Marie Deck Simkins.  Eloise was the president of the Senior Class as well as Valedictorian.  Unfortunately while she was in college she was involved in a serious car accident and was never quite the same.  She lived in New Vienna and never married.  She had  a younger brother, Allen.  She was born in Kentucky and in 1920 her family was living in Washington DC, though her parents were originally from New Vienna.
• Mildred Ann Stuckert Leach (1911-2010) was the daughter of Charles Albert and Clara Vollrath Stuckert.  She married Ralph Leroy Leach and had a daughter.  She was born in Illinois and moved to Ohio sometime after elementary school.  In 1930 she and her family were living as lodgers with Oscar Johnson (no relation to any of the other Johnsons mentioned in this class) on SR-73.
• Frances Johnson Trout (1911-1990) was the daughter of William Connell Johnson and Elinor Carpenter Johnson.  She had three siblings, John Ashley, Fred Warren, and George Edwin.  George Edwin Johnson (1917-1999) should not be confused with George William Johnson, a fellow classmate, mentioned above. 
• Emmett Wilkin (1911-1992) married Millie Mable Hunt of New Vienna, divorced in 1961.  He was a farmer near Newark, Ohio but moved to Colorado to live with his son just prior to his death.  Emmett was a 3rd cousin to Mary Uible Horton.

Mrs. Hildebrant's 4th Grade 1961-62

Continuing with the 1962 New Vienna Tiger Tales Yearbook, here are part of the Fourth Graders.  There was also a combo 4th-5th Grade with Mrs. Wolfe.  These Fourth Graders would become part of the East Clinton Class of 1970.

The caption above the picture indicates that Sandra Mathews is not pictured, however, sources have identified her as the girl between Mickey Collins and Mickey West in the row with Mrs. Hildebrant.  There is also an unidentified girl in the top row, as only two girls are listed and there appear to be three.

Rennie Kuntzman is deceased.  He was a Tech. Sgt. with the US Air Force Expeditionary Center.  You can read more about him at this website.  He died in 1995.

Boden's Flour 1899-1930s Mill Story #3

The beginning . . . .

In 1807 Stephen Hussey purchased land that included what would become New Vienna.  When he died in 1812, he left the property to his sons.  Thomas took his share in the NW corner of the survey, built a log cabin and laid out the village now known as New Vienna in 1827.

By the early 1830s Thomas and Joshua Hussey built a "treadmill" now more commonly in the historical sense referred to as treadwheel, a type of mill operated by a person (or animals) treading steps of a wheel to grind grain, cut lumber, etc.  From Historic Buzzard's Glory (1976 Bill & Georgia Dodd):  "This was afterward changed to a steam mill and a sawing department added."

By 1876 New Vienna had 2 mills which grind and saw, 2 coalries and 1 grain & lumber business.  According to the 1870s History of Clinton County, "Israel Nordyke built a horse-mill below Snow Hill" but there is no mention of an "early" mill in New Vienna village.

What later became Boden's Flour Mill and later yet New Vienna Milling Co. was also operated for many years as a steam mill using a stationary steam engine.  The Bodens took over (or built?) the mill in the early 1890s.  The family also had a grain/feed/coal operation in Greenfield, Ohio.  With their location next to the railroad tracks they were perfectly situated to take advantage of easy shipping.

According to the The County of Highland: a History of Highland County, Ohio by J. W. Klise published in 1902, John Boden was the eldest son of Hugh Boden, a prominent businessman in Greenfield Ohio.  The Boden Milling Co., formed in 1899 by John and his brother, dealt largely “in grain, feed and coal."

In a promotion, advertised in the Hillsboro paper of November 4, 1897  Boden Bros. advertised that in each sack of flour would be found at ticket bearing a letter of the firm name.  Consumers could save these tickets until they had enough letters to spell out “Boden Brothers” in full, and then could bring or send them to the office and receive a “free, handsome set of silver knives and forks.”

The New Vienna operation was later called Boden & Son, and their chief product was “Boden’s Best flour” according to an article in the Hillsboro News-Herald, November 17, 1910.

New Vienna School c1893, 1910 and Duchemin House

Duchemin? Duchmein? DuChemin?  In the census records it is also spelled Duchman and Deucheman.  Evidently this was a name in transition.

Two graduates of NVHS are listed with the last name of Duchemin, both members of the class of 1886: Lizzie Duchemin and Stella Cox Duchemin, though we can assume that Stella married a Duchemin rather than being born into the family.

Mary Elizabeth "Lizzie" was born in New Vienna in 1868.  She married William Edwin Dunn in Clinton County in 1893.  In 1920 they were living in Indianapolis.  She was the youngest child of Abraham (1814-1891) and Mary Elizabeth Woodmansee Duchemin (1833-1887).

Other children of Abraham and Mary Elizabeth included: John (1852-c1919), Florence (1853-1950), Martha (1854-?), and Frank (1857-1901).  To confuse matters, Martha married Robert Cox and became the step-mother of Stella Cox Duchemin (1866-?), the other graduate of NVHS.  Stella married the oldest brother, John, her step-mother's older brother.  Stella died in St. Louis sometime after 1930.  Her son, Robert Harold lived in Clinton/Highland county as a boy but moved to Missouri.

Four of the Duchemin family are buried in New Vienna's IOOF Cemetery:  Abraham and Mary Elizabeth on the East Side, and Frank, their youngest son, and his wife, the former Elizabeth M "Lizzie" Turner, on the West Side.  All of Frank and Lizzie's five children were born in New Vienna, one died at childbirth, two moved to California, one to Illinois, and the fate of the youngest, Edith born in 1897, is unknown.

From the NVHS Memory Book 1881-1963:
In the summer of 1876, Abraham Duchmein built a three story residence on the lot adjoining the present [now former] school house.  The Wilmington News-Journal stated that it was the largest private residence in the country.  [Did they mean county??]  Mr. Duchmein was a brick mason and a brother-in-law of Francis Woodmansee who built the large home across the street, facing the school house.  Mr. Duchmein died in 1891 and sometime later it was acquired by the school.  In 1918 when the present building was built, the High School held classes there and the grades were held down town town in rooms over the business houses and the first and second grades were held in the opera house, now the site of the Senior Citizens.  Later it [the Duchemin House] was used as the residence of the superintendent.

Due to a scarcity of teachers, a Clinton-Highland Normal school was opened in New Vienna High School in 1914.  The students did their practice teaching here also.  It was moved to Wilmington College in the fall of 1925.  Their last teacher Mary Hoskins also went to Wilmington College.

New Vienna School 1878-1917 postcard

New Vienna School post card from the early 1900s is unmailed but addressed to Miss Mildred Pearl, New Vienna, Ohio, Clinton Co. Message says "To Mildred, From Mumma, 1907. This postcard is of the "old, old" New Vienna School. Not sure why the card labels it as plural buildings, as only the one is visible. Perhaps they are including the outhouses which are hidden in the back?

According to the 1900 Census, Mildred, born in New Vienna in 1898 was the daughter of Edward (1858-1903), a carriage painter, and Valeria (b.1871) Pearl.  In the 1910 census, Valeria and Mildred are shown as living with Valeria's parents, Thomas J. (1846-1920) and Margaret Ann Pitzer (1850-1920) McCune.  Thomas is listed as having his "own income."

Mildred married Dennis Cook (1853-1936) in 1920.  His first wife, Flora Terrell, had died in 1905, leaving him with seven children, most of whom were grown by 1920.  Mildred died in Wilmington in 1977.

This School was built in 1878.  It was torn down in 1917.

According the the Memory Book:  In 1878 a new square brick building was erected with four rooms below, two rooms and a hall, called Whittier Hall, above.  This hall was afterwards converted into two rooms, and they were used as the laboratory.  

This building was removed from the school lot in the summer of 1917, when a new modern fireproof building was constructed and was ready for the school term starting in September 1918.

The high school was organized in 1878 and the first class graduated in 1881.  This class had three members: Hallie Baum, Will Rayburn and Charles Blackburn.  Charles was the father of Joseph and Mary Blackburn and Charles Blackburn, Jr.  

The board employed J.F. Fenton as principal for that year.  It was with him that Commencement Exercises were inaugurated and the first Commencement was held in the spring of 1881 in Whittier Hall.

Due to the scarcity of teachers, a Clinton-Highland Normal school was opened in NV High School in 1914.  The students did their practice teaching here also.  It was moved to Wilmington College in 1925.

[During that time] The children were taken to school by horse drawn wagons, and sleds in the winter time.

2nd Grade class 1971-72

These students would have been members of the East Clinton Class of 1982.  They not only survived the NV playground, but a year with Miss Purtee.  [I had my own experience with Miss Purtee, and I understand she did not mellow too much with age.]   Can you help name those who are not yet identified?
